Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) was part of the dedication ceremony of the Route 533 bridge over Muddy Run in Southampton Township to a local hero. The bridge will now be known as the Private First Class Dana Edward Diehl Memorial Bridge. Kauffman was joined by Delores Mowery, sister of PFC Diehl.
HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) today was part of the dedication ceremony of the Route 533 bridge over Muddy Run in Southampton Township to a local hero. The bridge will now be known as the Private First Class Dana Edward Diehl Memorial Bridge.

Private First Class Dana Diehl was a Shippensburg native who served his country as a medical specialist with the 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Squadron, 4th Calvary, Headquarters Troop.

Diehl died on Dec. 10, 1968, in South Vietnam, when the vehicle in which he was riding was struck by an explosive device.

“We are here today to pay homage to Dana’s life and service – a life that, although much too short, was impactful and well-lived. In fact, the idea for dedicating this bridge in his memory came from his classmates from the Shippensburg High School graduating Class of 1967,” said Kauffman during the dedication. “All these decades later, his friends and classmates have not forgotten Dana, and they made this request to ensure he never will be.

“This dedication is not just about putting a sign on a bridge. It is a about having a daily, physical reminder of Dana’s life and ultimate sacrifice and the service and sacrifice of all our veterans,” continued Kauffman.

The dedication of the bridge was made possible by legislative language drafted by Kauffman that was included in Senate Bill 894 and signed into law as Act 9 of 2018 on Feb. 15.

PennDOT will be responsible for erecting and maintaining the signs.
