Kauffman Joins in Call for an On-Time, Balanced Budget With No Tax Increases
State Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today joined approximately a dozen fellow lawmakers in calling for leaders in the House to pass the state budget by the June 30 deadline with no tax or fee increases.
“Since Governor Ed Rendell has been in office, we have not passed a budget on time,” said Kauffman. “That is inexcusable considering passage of a balanced budget is the General Assembly’s chief responsibility. With less than three months to go and little to no progress yet to be made in terms of reaching a consensus on the budget, we need to urge our legislative leaders and the administration to make the budget a priority.”
During today’s press conference, members asked that standing committees be given sections of the budget relating to their realm of expertise in order to move the process forward and identify areas of waste and efficiency changes that could help close the state’s estimated $2.6 billion deficit.
“The taxpayers of Pennsylvania deserve to know that their money is being spent efficiently and prudently and that lawmakers are devoting the time needed to get the state budget passed on time,” said Kauffman. “Tax increases are not necessary in order to achieve a balanced budget; we just need to critically assess state funding and make the kinds of tough choices Pennsylvania families make every day in order to balance their checkbooks.”
Kauffman was one of more than 45 lawmakers who signed a letter sent to House leaders urging for swift budget action.
