HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) this week sent a letter to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Thomas Saylor to express his reservations about the request from other lawmakers to categorically release populations of inmates from state and county prisons in response to the current health crisis facing the state.
“I, too, am concerned about the welfare of those in our state and county prison systems; however, steps are already being taken to better protect vulnerable populations within the system,” said Kauffman. “In addition, many judges are already responding to the pandemic byconsidering on a case-by-care basis the release of non-violent offenders through parole, work-release and probation measures already in place.
“Now is not the time for unprecedented widespread releases. We need to look at each individual and the possible impact his or her release would have on victims and the public,” continued Kauffman.
The letter Kauffman sent to Saylor is attached.
