Kauffman Appointed to Welfare Reform Team

Scotland lawmaker to serve as deputy Republican whip

Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today announced that he has been selected by House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana) to serve on the Welfare Reform Policy Development Team during the 2011-12 Legislative Session.

“I am grateful to Representative Reed for providing me the opportunity to serve on this team to address an important issue,” Kauffman said, noting that he served on the Republican Policy Committee’s Welfare Reform Task Force during the 2007-08 legislative session.  “During the past few years, several reports have pointed to mismanagement and abuse within the Department of Public Welfare (DPW), making it necessary for the General Assembly to analyze every program and procedure within DPW to ensure that taxpayer dollars are only being used for those truly in need.”

Kauffman noted that for more than two years, Auditor General Jack Wagner has performed many audits of DPW that revealed millions of taxpayer dollars that are lost through waste, fraud and abuse, and lax policies and procedures.

“We must take the necessary steps to increase accountability and restore integrity to DPW,” he said.

In addition, Kauffman has been appointed by House Republican Whip Stan Saylor (R-York) to continue serving as a deputy whip in the new session.  First appointed to this position during the 2009-10 session, Kauffman looks forward to advancing the Republican Caucus’ agenda while in the majority.

“I want to thank Representative Saylor for trusting me to continue serving in this capacity,” Kauffman said.  “As deputy whip, I am responsible for communicating the Republican Caucus’ position prior to House floor debates, monitoring floor attendance and obtaining accurate vote tallies of floor actions.”

Kauffman was sworn into his fourth two-year term in the state House on Jan. 4, representing the residents of the 89th Legislative District, which includes the townships of Shippensburg and Southampton, and the Borough of Shippensburg in Cumberland County; and the townships of Greene, parts of Guilford, Letterkenny, Lurgan and Southampton, and the boroughs of Chambersburg, Orrstown and Shippensburg in Franklin County.
