Kauffman Congratulates Thaddeus Stevens Elementary on Statewide Honor
HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today congratulated Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School in the Chambersburg Area School District for being nominated to compete in the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbons Schools award.

The award is given to schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health, foster wellness, and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement.

“Only four schools statewide were nominated by the state Department of Education, and I think the inclusion of Thaddeus Stevens Elementary in this select list speaks volumes about the dedication of administrators, faculty, students, parents and community members to environmental practices,” Kauffman said.

In addition to this recognition, Thaddeus Stevens Elementary was named a 2012 Pennsylvania Pathways School and will receive a $3,000 award to further its work to achieve goals outlined in the Green Ribbon Schools pillars.

“I want to extend my appreciation to the school district for all of its work in making choices that will sustain and protect our environment for years to come,” Kauffman said. “By implementing green practices into the school and curriculum, students are learning at a young age the importance of protecting our Commonwealth and its resources. Thaddeus Stevens Elementary serves as a role model for our community, our state and the nation.”

The announcement was made by Pennsylvania Education Secretary Ron Tomalis, who noted that 47 Pennsylvania schools submitted applications for nomination. Of the 32 states participating in the recognition program, Pennsylvania had the highest number of applications.

The winners at the national level will be notified on April 23.
