Kauffman Applauds $500,000 in State Funding for New Shelter and Advocacy Center Serving Franklin and Fulton Counties
HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today applauded the announcement of $500,000 in funding for the Women In Need (WIN) shelter and advocacy center for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This has been a top priority for Kauffman, who strongly advocated for the funding on behalf of the organization.

Funding was awarded under the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), which funds projects selected by the governor which impact regional economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects.

“This funding will help women, and their children, throughout Franklin and Fulton counties who have been the victims of domestic or sexual violence,” said Kauffman. “Providing these women with a safe and secure place to live and get the help they need to heal is paramount.”

Since 1976, WIN has helped educate, support and empower victims of abuse throughout Franklin and Fulton counties. The organization provides a 24-hour hotline, individual and group counseling sessions, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), and prevention education.

The funding will go toward WIN’s $3.35 million capital campaign to build a new shelter and advocacy center. The new center will provide living accommodations for up to 24 residents, with increased safety and security; and room for improved living, dining and counseling opportunities. The new facility will also be accessible to those with disabilities and allow for better consolidation of staff and services.

“The RACP is a competitive program with organizations all across the state seeking funding,” said Kauffman. “I am thrilled that WIN was selected to receive funding. This will go a long way in helping WIN reach its ultimate goal of building a facility worthy of the women and children seeking assistance.”
