Kauffman Announces $591,000 Grant for New CNG Refueling Station in Chambersburg
HARRISBURG – In an effort to make clean, domestic, affordable compressed natural gas (CNG) a more viable option for motorists and businesses here in Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) has announced a $591,000 grant for Sunoco Inc. to install a CNG refueling station in the borough of Chambersburg, announced Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin), who helped secure the grant.

Sunoco is planning to install a CNG refueling station near an industrial area where several businesses have expressed an interest in using CNG for their vehicles, particularly a municipal waste hauler. The facility will also be available for the public and will be accessible to motorists traveling on Interstate 81, which is adjacent to the property where the station will be located. The total project cost is $1,478,755, and Sunoco will provide $887,253 in matching funds.

“CNG fuel is gaining in popularity, and it makes sense to offer this domestic fuel source as an alternative to traditional diesel and gasoline for area businesses with large vehicle fleets and motorists traveling along I-81,” said Kauffman. “Funding for the grant is made possible with funds resulting from impact fees placed on natural gas drillers in the state. Although we don’t boast any natural gas fields here in Franklin County, every county and municipality in the Commonwealth benefit from the fees collected thanks to Act 13 of 2012, which created a Marcellus Shale Legacy Fund.”

The grant was awarded under the CFA’s Alternative and Clean Energy Program.
