Kauffman Supports Active Military with EIT Exemption Bill
HARRISBURG – A long-time advocate of Pennsylvania’s men and women in uniform, Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) authored a bill approved by the House today that would provide an Earned Income Tax (EIT) exemption for active duty military pay.

“Many of our state’s National Guard members are called to active service when a natural disaster strikes or other significant events occur,” said Kauffman. “When these brave men and women provide their assistance, they are often forced to leave their families, take a leave of absence from their employment and place their lives on the line, all while being paid at a lower wage. By exempting their pay during these times from the EIT, I believe it is the least we can do to show appreciation for our brave servicemen and servicewomen.”

Kauffman noted that active duty military pay used to be exempt, but a new law in 2008 was written in such a way that the definition of “earned income” was changed, which resulted in active duty military pay earned within the Commonwealth having the EIT taken out.

“I want to thank my colleagues in the House for supporting this legislation to benefit our state’s military men and women,” said Kauffman. “I am hopeful House Bill 561 will also receive swift passage in the Senate.”

House Bill 561 now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
