Kauffman Reacts to Governor’s 2016-17 Budget Address
HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) issued the following statement after Gov. Tom Wolf delivered his 2016-17 budget proposal, which again seeks to increase government spending and raise taxes on working Pennsylvanians.

“The governor came to the House chamber today to present his annual budget. Unfortunately, there was no real ‘fresh start’ contained in his budget address. Once again Gov. Wolf presented his vision to grow state government heavily dependent on an increase to the Personal Income Tax, along with an expansion of the sales tax.

“Gov. Wolf seeks to increase taxes by a total of $2.7 billion per year, primarily funded through an 11 percent increase in the income tax, which would be retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year. The people that I talk to in our community tell me that they cannot afford more taxes taken out of their paychecks for more government spending.

“It is unfortunate that the governor has refused to negotiate since his Dec. 29 line-item vetoes. To complete the line items that the governor vetoed and to achieve a responsible 2016-17 budget for the people of Pennsylvania, we must work together. Good faith negotiations are essential to this process. Instead, the governor came into the House chamber today and leveled partisan political attacks.

“Unfortunately, this could be another challenging budget year, as the governor’s starting plan appears to be a repeat of his failed attempts last year. While we are ready to work with the governor to come to a resolution, I plan to stand strong in representing my constituents who expect state government to spend smarter and wiser before coming back to taxpayers to ask for more.”
