Kauffman Appointed to Tourism, Gaming Committees
1/29/2009
Third-term lawmaker to serve as deputy Republican whip

State Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today announced his committee assignments for the 2009-10 legislative session. In addition to continuing to serve on the Consumer Affairs Committee, Kauffman will also be a member of the Tourism and Recreational Development and Gaming Oversight committees.

“Each of these panels deal with issues that are of paramount importance to our community and our Commonwealth as a whole,” said Kauffman. “I am pleased to serve on these committees and to play a key role in crafting policies that will impact the people of the 89th District and the people of Pennsylvania.”

The Gaming Oversight Committee was created to provide for legislative oversight of Pennsylvania’s burgeoning slot machine gambling industry and deals primarily with issues and legislation pertaining to that industry. The Tourism and Recreational Development Committee is responsible for reviewing legislation related to Pennsylvania’s second-largest industry, tourism. The panel oversees legislation regarding tourism, hotels, amusements and other recreational activities.

Kauffman also noted that he has been appointed by House Republican Whip Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) to serve as a deputy whip in the new session.

“I am grateful to Representative Turzai for this opportunity,” said Kauffman. “As a deputy whip, I will be responsible for communicating Republican Caucus positions prior to House floor debates, helping monitor floor attendance, and obtaining accurate vote counts before House floor votes. I look forward to carrying out these new responsibilities and helping the whip advance the Republican agenda.”

Kauffman has also been appointed to the Reform Task Force of the House Republican Policy Committee. House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Stanley Saylor (R-York) created the task force to explore new ways to reform government in Pennsylvania.

“In these difficult economic times, reforming Pennsylvania state government is more important than ever,” said Kauffman. “As we tackle the billions of dollars in deficits, we need to overhaul the way we develop a state budget and we need to examine areas where government can be streamlined, including internal reforms in the House of Representatives.”
