Kauffman Offers Statement on Governor’s 2010-11 Budget Address

State Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Cumberland/Franklin) today offered the following statement in response to Gov. Ed Rendell’s 2010-11 budget address, which proposed a 4 percent increase in state spending while facing an expected $525 million deficit by year’s end:

“I do not agree with the governor’s proposal to increase state spending by $1.2 billion when the state and its citizens are still dealing with the effects of the recession. Pennsylvania is facing an expected $525 million deficit by the end of June and the governor is still proposing that we increase state spending, instead of making the tough decisions to live within our means.

“I am also very concerned that his proposed spending is funded with overly optimistic revenue projection, the yet to be approved tolling of Interstate 80 and possible federal stimulus dollars that could come from Washington. “

“His proposal to create a new fund to cover the loss of stimulus funds and pay down the anticipated pension spike in 2011-12 with new and increased taxes placed on Pennsylvania residents today is the wrong move. Any tax increases should not be considered.

“I look forward to the upcoming budget appropriations hearings and learning more about what our current and future fiscal outlook entails and working in a bipartisan fashion to craft a fiscally responsible state budget.”
